Pennsylvania and Maryland collaborate to simplify car registration

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) have entered an agreement to simplify their residents’ experiences in car buying.

The agreement, called the Online Agent/Dealer Program, will make it easier for car owners to complete title and registration transactions when buying a car from outside their residential states. The agreement, which was signed last month, allows car dealers to electronically register and title vehicles purchased in the opposite state. The new collaboration enables the Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) of both PennDOT and MDOT to modernize their processes for vehicle titling and registration.

"The collaborative Online Agent/Dealer Program will be a great opportunity for car dealers to improve customer service," PennDOT Secretary Leslie Richards said. "PennDOT is excited to work with Maryland in order to create more efficient operations between state agencies and increase efficiency for our customers."

Prior to the new program, Pennsylvanians who purchased vehicles in Maryland (or vice versa) had to deliver their paperwork to their home state in order to title and register their new vehicles.

"This agreement is a great example of Gov. (Larry) Hogan's efforts to improve government efficiency and make life easier for Maryland citizens," Transportation Secretary Pete Rahn said. "Our partnership with Pennsylvania is another example of our ongoing efforts to use technology so our customers can skip the trip to the MVA."
