Peter Neffenger new TSA administrator

Peter Neffenger was sworn in as the sixth administrator of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) today. 

Neffenger previously served in the U.S. Coast Guard in staff, operations and leadership roles for 34 years. He was in charge of resources, strategy, doctrine and policy regarding the Coast Guard. He has experience with port security, crisis management and overseeing commercial maritime industry operations.

At the TSA, Neffenger will lead approximately 60,000 employees nationwide. He will be responsible for the security for approximately 450 airports across the U.S. as well as the Federal Air Marshal Service and security leadership for the nation's railroads, highways, mass transit systems, ports and pipelines.

“TSA’s mission is critical to the safety and security of our nation," Neffenger said. "I am deeply honored to continue serving our country, particularly alongside the dedicated men and women of TSA. I look forward to applying my years of leadership experience, law enforcement background and security skills to protecting our nation’s transportation systems.”

The U.S. Senate approved Neffenger’s selection on June 22. The swearing-in ceremony was held at the TSA headquarters in Arlington, Virginia.
