The Texas Transportation Commission recently announced that it has approved over $66 million from state and federal funds to offer transportation solutions for the state’s transit users.

The funds will be used to improve urban and rural mobility programs in Texas. The services, which will be made available to seniors, veterans and also people who have disabilities, will assist people in reaching school, work, healthcare facilities and other places.

In addition, the finances will assist many Texas transit users in reaching community programs, churches and other events in the state. The money will help bring congestion relief to growing metropolitan areas where populations have been increasing. With vanpools, park-and-ride commuter services and similar transportation options available as public transportation, it is hoped that the traffic congestion will decrease.

Every year, TxDOT approves federal and state public transportation grant programs, which amount to approximately $90 million. The majority of these funds are dedicated to transportation development credits that serve to support eligible capital project investments, such as facilities, vehicles, preventive maintenance and equipment.

“These services enhance independence and quality of life for our state’s public transit users,” TxDOT Executive Director Joe Weber said. “There is an increasing demand for these mobility programs, and we are proud to work with our partners to meet this demand and offer meaningful transportation solutions for Texans.”

Texas Department of Transportation is located at 125 E. 11th St., Austin.
