Texas commission awards transit funds for mobility programs transit funding

The Texas Transportation Commission announced Thursday it has awarded more than $66 million in state and federal funds to provide better mobility solutions for the state’s transit users.

The funds will be used to improve both urban and rural mobility programs throughout Texas. These programs offer services to seniors, veterans, people with disabilities, and other Texans who need to commute to school, work, health care facilities and other destinations.

Transit agencies said they used mobility programs to complete over 34 million trips in 2014 alone.

Funding for the programs can help relieve some of the traffic congestion that has been increasing in metropolitan areas that are growing rapidly. By using vanpools, park-and-ride commuter services and similar transportation options, the public can forgo driving their cars and waiting in traffic.

“These services enhance independence and quality of life for our state’s public transit users,” Texas Department of Transportation Executive Director Joe Weber said. “There is an increasing demand for these mobility programs, and we are proud to work with our partners to meet this demand and offer meaningful transportation solutions for Texans.”

The department administers state and federal public transportation grant programs that total approximately $90 million annually.
