Parking information project to aid truckers receives TIGER funding

The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) recently said that funding through its Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) program will be used to improve safety for truck drivers in eight states in the U.S.

The growing need for drivers and safety is one of the reasons USDOT gave $25 million in TIGER grants to the Regional Truck Parking Information and Management System (TPIMS). The goal of TPIMS project is to provide truckers with current information about parking that is available for their vehicles. This makes it easier for them to find a parking place and rest in a safe environment.

The eight states involved in the project are Kansas, Kentucky, Iowa, Indiana, Ohio, Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin.

“TPIMS will help improve trucker safety and help make the U.S. transportation system the safest in the world,” Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Administrator Gregory Nadeau said. “It involves using existing technology to distribute information to commercial drivers on truck parking capacity and current occupancy through smartphone apps, dynamic road signage, websites and parking facilities.”

Transporting goods across the U.S. is crucial to the national economy. Making roads safe for the men and women who operate the trucks is important to the success of the industry and economy.

An estimated 6 million drivers of commercial vehicles travel the roads in the U.S. every day. This estimate is presumed to continue rising by 2045.
