Wilmington’s Kerr Avenue receives NCDOT contract

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) recently granted a $22 million award to widen Kerr Avenue in Wilmington.

The contract will help to improve the safety of the road. The city of Wilmington will also add funds to the project, specifically for the sidewalks as well as bicycle lanes.

New traffic signals will also guarantee that traffic will move efficiently and smoothly.

Both North and South Kerr Avenue, extending from Martin Luther King, Jr. Parkway (US 74) to Randall Parkway, will need to be widened to include four travel lanes. In addition, crews will install sidewalks and bicycle lanes for pedestrians and cyclists. They will also add landscaping to the median of the road.

The crews will add new traffic signals at the following intersections: Market Street and Cinema Drive, Kerr Avenue and Cinema Drive, Kerr Avenue and new Center Drive/Sunglow Drive, Kerr Avenue and Birchwood Drive, as well as Market Street and Wilmington Avenue.

Adding paving and grade improvements will also improve the overall quality of the road. There will be drainage improvements made as well, which will allow the water to drain from adjacent shoulders on the road.
