California to install safer, lower-maintenance retro-reflective road signs

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) recently decided to install retro-reflective signs that will improve the safety of the area’s roads and also decrease costs.

Crews with Caltrans have begun to remove older signs and install the new ones.

The reflective signs are illuminated by headlights from passing cars, making them more clearly visible than other kinds of signs. In addition, there won’t need to be as many Caltrans staffers in the field.

Because the signs don’t need electricity to work, this will serve to decrease the cost of keeping the roads safe and also will require less maintenance, and thus fewer staffers in the field.
