The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) said this week that it is launching the next California State Rail Plan, which is designed to offer a new framework for the state's rail network.

The overall plan aims to improve rail and community connections throughout California through transportation infrastructure improvements over the next 20 years.

The goal is to finish this stage of the overall plan by 2018. It will be one of many planning tools that will be used to enhance the state rail system for future generations.

“To meet the challenges that come with a growing California, this rail plan will be part of defining a more sustainable transportation system for the future,” Caltrans Director Malcolm Dougherty said. “Improvements and expansion of California’s rail system will have a positive effect on the future mobility, environmental health and economic vitality of this state.”

Caltrans is requesting that the state's residents participate in developing this new plan through a public survey on the California State Rail Plan website at www.surveymonkey.com/r/2018railplan. The survey ends on March 4.
