Work begins today to replace two bridges on Interstate 87 over Albany-Shaker Road in Colonie, New York, as part of a $22.3 million project.

The two bridges were originally built when the interstate — known locally as the Adirondack Northway — was constructed in 1959.
On any given day, 102,000 motorists cross the two bridges.
“This project will replace two aging bridges along one of the busiest stretches of the Northway, upgrading an interstate highway that is critically important not just to New York, but to the entire Northeast,” New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said. “Infrastructure investments like this one will continue to grow our economy by facilitating the movement of goods to market, commuters to work and tourists to destinations in every corner of our state.”

The project was planned to make sure the construction will cause minimal impact for travelers. The new bridges will be built between existing bridges; and once the new bridges are finished, the old ones will be taken down.

“Exit 4 is a major connector to both our regional airport and one of the area’s most vibrant retail corridors,”  Assemblywoman Patricia Fahy said. “I commend Governor Cuomo for recognizing the critical importance of updating this corridor to the long-term economic vitality of the Capital Region.”

The contractors on the project are L&C Construction, in collaboration with Lancaster Development and Construction Co, Inc.,
