Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) acting secretary Leslie Richards recently announced that PennDOT has invested in $9.7 million in upgrades that will enhance the safety and improve the operations of six airports in Pennsylvania.
The Bureau of Aviation, a branch of PennDOT, administered the funds to the Aviation Transportation Program, which is a budget-grant program. Leaders at the program will distribute the donation in the areas in most need of upgrades. PennDOT’s grants have also added over $8.3 million from local matching funds.
Airports receiving funds include the Allegheny County Airport (for sidewalks and parking lots renovation), Doylestown Airport (to remove obstructions around the runway), Quakertown Airport (to remove obstacles around the runway), New Castle Municipal Airport (to build a hangar), Hazleton Municipal Airport (to purchase two privately owned hangars), and Williamsport Regional Airport (to improve airport safety, security and access as well build a new terminal).
"With aviation supporting thousands of jobs in Pennsylvania, it's vital that we ensure airports in Pennsylvania can make safety and operational upgrades," Richards said. "These projects are also investments in the communities these airports serve."
