The duo, along with Rep. James E. Clyburn (D-SC) and Columbia Mayor Stephen Benjamin, visited the Owen Steel Company.
“American companies like Owen Steel are facing increased costs due to congestion on our roads and ports,” Foxx said. “The whole country needs better quality roads, more durable bridges and the kind of large-scale repairs to America’s aging infrastructure that are only possible with federal investment.”
The GROW AMERICA tour visited five states in four days last week. The tour was meant to garner support for a long-term transportation bill to improve the nation's infrastructure so the U.S. can compete globally in the 21st century.
In addition to stopping in Columbia, South Carolina, Foxx and Biden joined Rep. Mark Sanford (R-SC), and several other state and local officials at the Wando Welch Terminal Project in Charleston. There they explained to constituents that South Carolina’s investments in infrastructure could create jobs and opportunities.
“U.S. ports have long been reliable gateways for our consumer goods, and we must ensure that they have the infrastructure necessary to accommodate the new generation of larger container vessels carrying increasing volumes of import and export cargo,” Maritime Administrator Chip Jaenichen said during the visit.
