Washington state's Senate passed a transportation package on Monday that aims to address issues relating to traffic congestion.
The $15 billion bill, co-sponsored by State Sen. Steve Litzow (R-Dist. 41), seeks to improve Interstates 405 and 90, and State Route 520, while also maintaining existing infrastructure statewide and addressing multi-model needs in King County.
The bill also includes reforms that will make state transportation projects less expensive, faster and more cost-efficient.
“Washington needs a 21st century transportation system that connects our communities,” Litzow said. "The Puget Sound region is growing rapidly, and preparing infrastructure for future growth will not only ease congestion, but spur economic development.”
Eastside residents would would benefit from an expansion of I-405 between Renton and Bellevue, funding to complete the SR 520 bridge over Lake Washington, and improvements to I-90 in Sammamish and Issaquah.
“In addition to addressing major highway projects, today’s work prepares us for future growth by providing Sound Transit with the chance to pursue additional light rail projects,” Litzow said. “Our comprehensive plan recognizes and supports the needs of drivers, transit riders, pedestrians and bicyclists.”
