$500 million available for TIGER funding, Foxx says

Department of Transportation (DOT) Secretary Anthony Foxx said Thursday that $500 million would be available to transportation projects through the seventh round of Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) funding.

He was joined in the announcement by Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett and Mississippi state Sen. Albert Butler. All three stressed the importance of this funding to states and localities across the country.

“The TIGER program has funded innovative projects, sparked new partnerships, created intermodal connections and enabled hard-to-fund projects that are changing the face of communities all across the country,” Foxx said. “We are excited to kick off this year’s competition.”

The program is a competitive grant program that allows community and state projects to receive funding.  Since 2009 the program has financed $4.1 billion into infrastructure enhancements in all states and the Washington, D.C., area.

“The TIGER grant enabled the city of Oklahoma City to leverage existing state and local funding to create a long-range vision for multimodal transportation in OKC,” Cornett said. “The grant allowed us to extend our vision of public transit in a way that will benefit our residents for decades to come.”

Earlier last week, the DOT introduced the the Grow America Act, an improved surface transportation reauthorization bill to provide additional funding for the TIGER grant program.
