The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) was awarded a $1 million grant from the Federal Highway Administration's Accelerated Innovation Deployment (AID) program last month in order to centralize its roadway data collection system.
The grant program aims to allow developing entities, including companies and municipalities, to aid in the overall enhancement of technology for highways and roadway transportation and infrastructure.
“Innovation in our transportation infrastructure will change the way America moves,” Department of Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said. “These grants encourage communities to use new technology and new ways to envision solutions to our transportation problems."
Currently data collection is provided by multiple sources, which complicates analysis procedure. With the federal grant, the department aims to have a single source of data in order to streamline the process used by multiple emergency and first response agencies. These include Next Generation 911 dispatching, public safety, mail and package delivery, snow removal, mapping, and automation routing among other applications and services.
The system is being developed by KDOT.
