Gov. David Ige last week signed a proclamation that authorizes the Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) to begin emergency highway repair work on Kamehameha Highway in Ka'a'awa between the Makaua Village condominium and the Crouching Lion Inn.
The effects of erosion have damaged the highway and recent repairs are showing signs of failings, according to the governor’s proclamation.
“Reconstruction of the highway foundation is necessary to maintain public safety for our residents and visitors,” Ige said. “An average of 11,000 vehicles pass through this area daily. These emergency repairs will help to ensure access to and from North Shore communities remains open.”
The repairs will include restoration of the highway foundation and pavement surface and stabilization of an adjacent retaining wall. The estimated cost of the repairs is $3 million.
Construction is expected to begin this month and will last for approximately three months. Daily work schedules will depend on the final design, which HDOT is currently working on. An archeological monitor will be on-site during the excavation and trenching process.
Public meetings to discuss the emergency repairs and collect the public’s input will be announced as soon as they are scheduled.
