New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu signed an ordinance Wednesday that would permit rideshare companies to operate in New Orleans Parish.
The law was drafted with certain regulatory practices for these companies to ensure the safety and well-being of clients and employees.
"Ridesharing is an economic benefit and much-needed transportation option for the citizens of New Orleans," District Councilmember and Chairman of the Transportation and Airport Committee Jared Bossett said. "Through long months of testimony, I heard from many constituents on the need for rideshare services that will create jobs and increase access. We are a city that embraces technology and look forward to rideshare companies operating here in our city."
The ordinance stipulates that rideshare companies are required to obtain a permit and it requires employees to be submitted for randomized drug testing. Companies will need to supply information on their insurance coverage, occupational licenses, contact information on the business, proof of a physical location among other items. It also set rules for what vehicles drivers within these companies may drive and where they can pick up passengers.
All companies that obtain a license must have a website that has information on customer service, explaining their zero tolerance policy on drug and alcohol use and a way to report on suspicious activity.
“I am grateful we were able to come together and craft this ordinance in a way that gives residents and visitors more choices, increases accessibility to more areas of our city and ensures the public’s safety,” Landrieu said.
