Highpower International converts more Chinese buses to electric power

Highpower International Inc. -- a manufacturer, developer and marketer of nickel-metal hydride and lithium rechargeable batteries and a provider of battery recycling and battery management systems -- added 74 hybrid buses to its installation portfolio during the first quarter of 2015.

As of March 31, the company installed its large format lithium batteries in 155 hybrid electric buses in regions throughout China. During the first quarter of 2015, an additional installation of large format lithium batteries in an additional 74 hybrid buses joins the other 81 buses from 2014.

Most of the hybrid electric buses were created by Shanghai Wanxiang Daewoo, an joint venture between South Korea and China.

Experts estimate that only 6 oercent of citizens in China own a vehicle, while the remaining 94 percent rely on public transportation. Most of these people use the 1.5 million buses that operate in the country.

"Electrical transportation is a strategic and important market for Highpower,” Highpower Chairman and CEO George Pan said. “China's central and local governments are committed to fighting air pollution. Since our large-format lithium batteries were certified by China's National Quality Control & Inspection Center for Buses last August, we have been actively exploring the electric bus market in China along with our partners. We are optimistic about the growth opportunities of the market in the coming years."
