During U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx's visit on Friday to the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority's (LACMTA) new bus maintenance and operations facility, Foxx stressed the importance of supporting public transit.
This stop was the latest on Foxx's tour across the country to highlight the importance of infrastructure and transportation investment, and to encourage Congress to reach a solution on reauthorizing federal funding for ground-transportation maintenance and upgrades through the Highway Trust Fund.
The new operations facility will allow the LACMTA to improve its bus service throughout the city. Joining Foxx at this event was Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and LACMTA CEO Phillip Washington. The facility will act as a service station for 200 buses and also serve as a fueling station.
“Public transportation provides critical support to hard-working Americans trying to access jobs, medical care, education and other vital services,” Foxx said. “We must continue to invest in our nation’s transportation infrastructure to ensure safe and reliable travel options that meet the needs of today’s riders, as well as for future generations.”
The U.S. DOT released a study that indicated an increased need for transportation investment as populations and migratory shifts are expected to grow and increase.
The current federal funding mechanism for ground-transit projects is set to expire at the end of this month.
