The TransBorder Freight Data recently published data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), a branch of the U.S. Department of Transportation, which shows the numbers of the North American freight industry from May 2015.
According to the data, the value of U.S. – NAFTA freight now stands at a total of $92.7 billion as of May 2015. This figure includes all modes that carried less U.S. – NAFTA freight compared to May 2014.
Year by year, the values for U.S. – NAFTA freight with all of its modes shows a decrease of 10.8 percent. There has also been a significant decrease in NAFTA value trade by vessel and pipeline for May 2015. This is because of the decreased unit price of mineral fuel shipments. Experts attribute the recession in Canada as a significant contributor to the significant decrease in freight flows with U.S. – NAFTA.
When comparing May 2014 with May 2015, the amount of commodities that were transported by rail have reduced by 7.4 percent. By truck, commodity transportation has decreased by 5.9 percent, and air transported commodities decreased by 2.4 percent. In addition, vessel freight values have shown a reduction of 22.4 percent. Pipeline freight has also decreased by 45.4 percent, which experts attribute to the lower unit price for mineral fuel shipments.
