The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) recently announced that Mark Van Port Fleet will be its new deputy director and chief operations officer (COO).
Van Port Fleet has over 35 years of MDOT experience. He will assume his new duties on Aug. 17, 2015. For the last six years, he has been the deputy chief engineer and director of the Bureau of Development. Before that, he was the engineer of design.
Van Port Fleet is an active member with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). As such, he has been the chair of multiple technical committees. Now, he sits on the organization’s Technology Implementation Group and Standing Committee on Performance Management.
Additionally, Van Port Fleet has receive national recognition for how he helped to apply Michigan’s Context Sensitive Solutions.
Van Port Fleet was preceded by Gregory C. Johnson, who will transition into the role of state highway administrator with the Maryland DOT this September.
"Mark is the right choice for this important post because of the immense respect he enjoys both inside the department and with our industry partners," State Transportation Director Kirk T. Steudle said. "He has embraced innovations in design and development and will continue MDOT's focus on remaining a national leader, even with unprecedented funding challenges."
