The Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI) recently released its data from June 2015, which is based on the amount that freight has carried for the for-hire transportation industry.
According to the rates, the for-hire transportation industry decreased 0.3 percent in both June and May 2015. This decrease has happened after one month of growth, as reported by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), a branch of the Department of Transportation; the index level for June 2015 has increased 28.8 percent over the figures from April 2009, which were at the lowest point of the latest recession.
In June 2015, the level of freight shipments by Freight TSI reached 1.2 percent below the industry’s highest point from Nov. 2014: 123.4.
The analysis shows that the decline from May to June, which amounts to 0.3 percent, is because of declines in water, truck, and rail intermodal shipments. For the quarter between April and June, another decline amounting to 0.6 percent was the first of its kind since 2014’s second quarter. This was also the largest decrease as of 2012’s third quarter.
Freight TSI gauges the month-to-month transitions for freight shipments by specific modes of transportation, measuring these in tons and ton-miles. These figures are then joined into a single index. This index then gauges the output from the for-hire freight transportation industry. It uses data gathered from rail, for-hire trucking, pipelines, inland waterways and air freight.
