New York City will receive up to $20 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to develop innovative Connect Vehicle (CV) and infrastructure application concepts as part of the federal Connected Vehicle Pilot deployment program.
Wyoming and Tampa, Florida also were chosen to receive funding to develop and deploy vehicles that can anonymously communicate important vehicle information with each other and nearby infrastructure, such as stoplights.
New York City plans to install Vehicle to Vehicle technology in vehicles that commute through Midtown Manhattan. City officials also said that Vehicle to Infrastructure technology would be installed in Midtown. The technology also will be deployed in Brooklyn, and along FDR Drive between 50th and 90th streets.
"Today’s announcement is a big step forward for the future of how we move in this country, from our rural communities to our biggest cities,” DOT Secretary Anthony Foxx said. “It has been a core mission of the department to support promising new technologies; and through these types of smart investments, we are opening the door to a safer and cleaner network and expanding how future generations travel.”
