During the last year, Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx has visited technology companies, research labs and manufacturers to show the support for innovative transportation technologies.
Once an innovative technology can show that it improves the safety and the methods of infrastructure, the department wants to make the technology available to the public as soon as possible.
Using connection and autonomous vehicle technology can help drivers have a safer commute. for example, drivers will no longer have to wonder whether a lane is clear when they are switching lanes. Connected vehicle technology may even eliminate an estimated 80 percent of accidents caused by unimpaired drivers.
“None of us are perfect, and when we're behind the wheel, mistakes can — and do — happen,” Foxx said. “So imagine having a car that is equipped with technology that can correct human error. Imagine riding a bicycle to a transit stop during rush-hour or walking across a busy street. Except now, you can basically communicate with the drivers and infrastructure surrounding you, and you're armed with information, so you're much less vulnerable.”
The new, smart transportation infrastructure could prove to be the latest addition to the backbone of the U.S. infrastructure industry. for example, it would provide commercial drivers easier travel with simplified logistics to speed freight throughout the nation, improving the overall economy.
