Federal Highway Administrator
Gregory Nadeau recently joined state and local officials to open the LBJ Express project in Dallas.
The goal of the $2.6 billion project was to rebuild one of North Texas’ busiest highways. The project used approximately $1.2 billion in federal funding.
Experts estimate that the new roadway will improve mobility by almost doubling the previous roadway's capacity.
“Managing growth means managing mobility,” Nadeau said. “LBJ Express is leading the way with new and improved lanes and roads that will give travelers options in getting to and from Dallas safely.”
The project’s engineers used the design-build delivery method, which is included in the “Every Day Counts” partnership of the Federal Highway Administration. This partnership encourages engineers and designers to use innovations that have been underutilized but serve to shorten the process of the project, decrease congestion, improve roadway safety and heighten environmental sustainability.
“Innovative financing can help replace and repair our country’s crumbling infrastructure, but we also need long term infrastructure funding to get more projects like this one off the starting blocks,” Transportation Secretary
Anthony Foxx said. “Congress is back from summer recess and now we need them to get to work on long-term transportation funding that will help build more projects like this one, providing good jobs and fueling the nation’s economy.”
