The White House and the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) recently held a ceremony to honor 11 people throughout the U.S. who are considered “White House Transportation Champions of Change”; Anthony Foxx, who is the U.S. transportation secretary, and the White House chose these people because of their achievements in innovation and outstanding leadership.
Earlier in 2015, the USDOT released the Beyond Traffic draft report. The report evaluates the choices and trends that are part of U.S. transportation infrastructure during the upcoming 30 years. Some of these challenges include an estimated 45 percent rise in freight volume, 70 million more people living in the U.S. by 2045, a transportation system needing to withstand more extreme weather events, and demographic changes in urban as well as rural areas.
The Champions of Change event seeks to recognize people who have tried to solve these challenges in the infrastructure industry.
“This year’s nominees are a truly gifted group of individuals who have exceptional vision and foresight when it comes to the issues we are dealing with in transportation,” Foxx said. “Their exemplary leadership is charting the course for our 21st century needs. I applaud them, and I hope to see others follow their lead.”
