The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) recently announced that the new M-231 is now open to traffic.
The road’s opening depends on the weather, and crews will be making the last finishing touches to the roadway. These include pavement markings that require good weather. The officials estimate that the road will be open around 4 p.m. today.
The project is the result of a partnership between MDOT, the townships of Crockery and Robinson as well as Ottawa County. The goal was to repair the new two-lane route to give necessary additional crossing over the Grand River. The road will reduce congestion throughout Ottawa County, which has consistently been one of the largest and fastest growing Michigan counties in recent years.
M-231 is a total of seven miles long. It connects Lake Michigan Drive (also called M-45) in Robinson Township with M-104 and I-96 located in Crockery Township.
"Life-saving minutes, commute times and congestion relief are just a few of the benefits this new road will provide," State Rep. Amanda Price said. "This is a great collaboration on the federal, state and local levels, and we are very pleased to open this new road to the state of Michigan."
