Officials from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) will hold a webinar on November 18 to evaluate the large truck fatalities of bicyclists and pedestrians.
The webinar, which serves to back up the Mayors’ Challenge for Safer People and Safer Streets, is designed to improve safety and involve new stakeholders by evaluating these accidents. The webinar will feature model case-study examinations as well as outline community resource opportunities that may help improve safety on the roads.
Recent studies demonstrate that fatalities involving bicyclists, pedestrians and large truck crashes have risen alongside fatalities involving bicyclists, pedestrians and other motor vehicles.
The most recent year that data was available for the FMCSA to use in their analysis is 2013, when a total of 78 bicyclists and 338 pedestrians died in crashes that involved large trucks and accounted for 2 percent and 8.5 percent, respectively, of all 3,964 fatalities.
The data was taken from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to be used in the FMCSA analysis.
