The U.S. House Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation and the Subcommittee on Livestock and Foreign Agriculture have scheduled a hearing Tuesday to discuss the maritime transportation industry and its role in transporting food aid.
The maritime transportation industry is invaluable to the health of the national economy as well as international relations.
The hearing, entitled "U.S. International Food Aid Programs: Transportation Perspectives," will be held at 10 a.m. at 1300 Longworth House Office Building in Washington, D.C.
The first panel includes David J. Berteau, the assistant secretary of Defense, Logistics and Material Readiness at the Department of Defense; and Paul N. Jaenichen, Sr., the administrator of the Maritime Administration.
The second panel includes James E. Caponiti, American Maritime Congress president; Philip Shapiro, the president and CEO of Liberty Maritime Corporation; Brian Schoeneman, the Political and Legislative director of the Seafarers International Union; and Captain John W. Murray, the president and CEO of Hapag-Lloyd USA.
The hearing will also address how to best change the current cargo preference rules and food aid programs to improve the ongoing partnership.
