The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has started to construct a new undercrossing on State Route 189 at the Mariposa Port of Entry in Nogales.
The $3.3 million improvement project will
enable pedestrians to walk to and from the port safely. It will include a 10-by-10-foot, 365-foot-long concrete box culvert on the eastern half of SR 189 and will feature lighting and ventilation structures. Crews will also add new traffic signals, sidewalks and storm drains.
The connection from State Route 189 to State Port Drive closed Thursday. The northbound lane of SR 189 was narrowed to a single lane from State Port Drive to Port Access Drive to build the northern portion of the undercrossing.
Drivers who travel SR 189 should be cautious of the various traffic restrictions. People can still gain access from SR 189 to Port Access Drive using the State Port Drive intersection.
Crews expect to complete the work this winter.
