The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) recently expanded a new vehicle technologies and infrastructure program that is designed to reduce fuel consumption, costs and damage to the planet.
USDOT is the first federal agency to be part of the Department of Energy’s Workplace Charging Challenge.
The charging stations are specifically designed for electric vehicles, and these stations are important to the future of the nation’s clean transportation vision. President Barack Obama has encouraged the federal government to increase the number of opportunities for employees to take advantage of the new technology.
USDOT first began to participate in the program this past summer. The organization introduced the pilot program at its main headquarters, where there was a strict policy for the employees who used the charging station inside the agency’s parking garage.
Now USDOT is furthering its pilot by creating workplace charging stations at all of the DOT facilities throughout the United States. The stations will reach from Florida to California. By 2025, the USDOT has planned to have more than 500 workplace charging outlets for employees to use.
More than 240 U.S. employers have already joined the challenge to offer PEV charging access to more than 1 million employees based at countless worksites through the nation.
