INDOT prepares for winter

Governor Mike Pence declared last week Winter Weather Preparedness Week for Indiana in preparation for the winter season.

The main priority for the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) crews throughout the winter is snow removal and ice prevention. This applies to more than 11,000 miles of Indiana’s U.S. highways, interstates and state routes.

This year, INDOT added new equipment to its fleet, which already totals more than 1,000 plow trucks for the state. Another 10 tow plows will serve to clear highways with multiple lanes.

The crews used approximately 278,000 tons of granular salt as well as 5.2 million gallons of salt brine to cover federal and state highways this winter. Thus, INDOT has started to receive salt deliveries, and already, the stockpile exceeds 193,000 tons.

INDOT is currently in the process of hiring seasonal as well as permanent plow drivers. Interested applicants can apply at http://careers.in.gov.
