I-65 ribbon cutting ceremony takes place on Worthsville Road

Officials from the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony Monday for the new diverging diamond interchange located at Interstate 65 based at Worthsville Road.

Beginning at 2 p.m., Greenwood Mayor Mark Myers as well as INDOT commissioner Brandye Hendrickson led the ceremony.

The project, which amounted to $16.1 million, was delayed, though, because of poor weather. Crews were unable to finish the permanent pavement markings, which are needed before the road can be officially opened and accessible to traffic in the area.

Instead, crews finished adding the temperature-sensitive striping products throughout daylight hours Tuesday, when they closed the lanes between mile marker 96.0 and mile marker 98.0 on I-65. The closures started at 11 a.m. and affected all of the travel lanes at various times.

The prime contractors were E&B Paving and Gradex who built the diverging diamond interchange, which received funding from the city of Greenwood as well as INDOT.

Later, the project will need the crews to close and restrict other lanes throughout the winter. The project will be ongoing over the next several months.
