The California Department of Transportation (CDOT) recently scheduled a demonstration of the new safety features that they have added in crosswalks throughout the city of Sacramento.
This innovative safety feature is the Yellow Pedestrian Border (YPB), a yellow border comprised of LED lights. The border encompasses the signal head as soon as a pedestrian presses the cross button, alerting drivers to pedestrians who are approaching the street as drivers look to turn.
The YPB is currently in California, where it is being tested to determine its effectiveness. The California Traffic Control Devices Committee (CTCDC) will hear an explanation of the YPB in Sacramento this coming week.
Earlier this year, YPB was included in a presentation at the National Committee on Uniform Traffic Control Devices in San Antonio, Texas.
Caltrans Senior Transportation developed YPB under the leadership of Rob Stinger, an engineer.
Safety continues to be a leading concern for officials and innovators involved in the transportation and infrastructure industry. With more drivers on the roads than ever before, there must be further innovation to guarantee that people will remain safe as they use U.S. transportation and infrastructure.
