The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) invested over $1 billion in its local and state bridge, road, traffic and trail safety projects in 2015.
The funds came from a combination of state and federal transportation financing. Gov. Mike Pence also funded a significant amount through his Major Moves 2020 program.
Thanks to these funds, INDOT was able to invest much more in its major projects, all of which aim to decrease travel time, heighten traffic flow and raise preservation work so that bridges and paved roads are improved and longer-lasting.
Over $220 million of the funds were used in towns, cities and counties throughout Indiana. These projects include new Interstate from Bloomington to Crane, a new freeway located in Hamilton County, new travel lanes in Greenwood and a new cloverleaf in Evansville, among other projects.
“I want to thank the INDOT team for their dedication to modernizing and maintaining Indiana’s transportation network,” Pence said. “In 2015, we took significant steps forward in enhancing our highway system with the opening of a new section of I-69 in Southwest Indiana and the opening of the U.S. 31 freeway in Hamilton County, among other projects. At the same time, we continued to invest in preserving bridges and improving pavement conditions all across the state. In 2016, my administration is committed to securing additional funding for both state and local roads and bridges – ensuring that Indiana remains the Crossroads of America.”
