Crews with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) New York City Transit (NYCT) have scheduled weekend shutdowns to make improvements to the Flushing 7 Subway Line between Queensboro Plaza and Times Square/42nd Street in both directions, as well as complete the Steinway Tunnel fortification project, part of infrastructure repairs from Superstorm Sandy in 2012.

NYCT already has made significant improvements to the line in an effort to improve reliability and increase ridership demand. Most of the line has been improved with new tracks or new panels, better communications-based train control system (CBTC) and new signals. The Steinway Tunnel, which connects Manhattan and Queens, also is being rebuilt from storm damage and refortified against future storms.

For 2016, officials at NYCT have scheduled work closures and shutdowns on weekends to avoid conflicting with New Yorkers’ work schedules. The weekend service shutdowns will be spaced from Queens to Manhattan. Fortunately, these closures will be shorter in duration and less frequent than in earlier years because the project will soon be finished.

The majority of the replaced track panel on the 7 Subway Line is on a three-track segment. This means service will not need to be stopped entirely, as trains can safely travel past the work zones while crews finish the project.

“The growth of the Flushing Line matters greatly to the growth of Queens, and these projects are critical to the future of the line,” James Ferrara, interim president of NYCT, said. “Replacing old tracks means a smoother, faster ride for customers, and installing a modern signal system means less-crowded and more reliable commutes. Improvements to any part of our infrastructure allow us to better serve all of our customers. This work may be a short-term inconvenience now, but every repair or improvement we make is a step toward a better Flushing Line and a more reliable subway system for all.”
