Officials with the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) recently scheduled pothole repairs for Interstate 64 in Dubois, Crawford and Perry Counties.
Potholes are created when there are cracks in the road. Water drips into the cracks, then freezes and thaws over time. Mixing these elements with regular highway traffic results in loosening asphalt layers.
It is especially important to patch potholes after there has been recent snow and ice. Because asphalt plants are closed during the winter, crews use a cold mixture to fill the holes until the summer months, when the asphalt plants reopen and a permanent patch can be installed.
The repairs are scheduled to start on Tuesday. To accomplish this work, maintenance crews need to close one lane at specific locations to patch potholes. Traffic will be able to use the remaining open lane.
The closures will last for two days. There always will be at least one lane of traffic open to traffic flow in either direction.
Depending on the weather, the maintenance work will continue until the end of this month, contingent on weather conditions.
