New York City's Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) New York City Transit may revive the W Subway Line, serving Manhattan and Queens, later this year, enabling the Q Line to provide access to Second Avenue between 63rd and 96th Streets when it opens later this year.

The first phase of the Second Avenue Line would serve the current F Line station at Lexington Avenue and 63rd Street. There would also be three new stations established at 86th Street, 72nd Street, and 96th Streets.

This is part of an ongoing project to upgrade Second Avenue. The current 96th Street Station recently was given a permanent power supply, and the final track crossover north of the 72nd Street station also has been finished, so that trains can change tracks as needed.

“With every day’s work on the Second Avenue Subway, the MTA gets closer to fulfilling a promise first made to New Yorkers in 1929,” MTA Chairman and CEO Thomas Prendergast said. “Opening the Second Avenue Subway will provide new options for our customers and relieve congestion on Lexington Avenue 4, 5 and 6 trains.”
