The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) recently awarded the City of Montague, in Muskegon County, a transportation economic development grant to finance road-revamping projects.

The funds are specifically dedicated to rebuilding Industrial Park Drive, as well as Wilcox Street. Both of these routes help bring customers to businesses in the region.

The $500,000 project received $375,000 in funding from Transportation Economic Development Fund (TEDF) Category F grant funding. The city itself is financing the project's remaining $125,000.

Crews in Montague will rebuild Industrial Park Drive, which was built in the 1980s, from Cook Street to Whitbeck Road. There will be additional construction between Wilcox Street and Whitbeck Road, east of Scharmer Drive.

The construction work means crews will broaden the roadways another 2 feet. The workers will install aggregate shoulders, which will protect the edges of the new pavement.

"For the last three years, we have tried and failed to schedule this important project because we lacked the necessary funding," Montague City Manager John French said. "These roads serve several companies in our industrial park, including Chassix, the county's second-largest employer, with more than 700 jobs. Without this essential MDOT grant, inefficient pothole patching would be our only other choice."
