PORT AUTHORITY OF NEW YORK AND NEW JERSEY: Port Authority Reports New Monthly Records For February at Region's Airports, Seaport, Geothals Bridge

Port Authority of New York and New Jersey issued the following announcement on March 25.

The Port Authority announced today that its airports, seaport and Goethals Bridge continued to report record activity levels in February 2019, further building on record levels established in 2018. These record levels come at a time that the agency is actively engaged in significantly upgrading its legacy transportation facilities under its $32 billion capital investment program to provide customers with a 21st century experience.

Airports:

In February 2019, the Port Authority handled a projected 9.31 million passengers at its four commercial airports – John F. Kennedy International, Newark Liberty International, LaGuardia and New York Stewart International airports – the highest total ever achieved in the month of February, surpassing the previous monthly record set in February 2018. The record aviation passenger volume was driven by record passengers at Newark Liberty International and LaGuardia airports, and record international travel at John F. Kennedy International Airport.

Port of New York and New Jersey:

During February 2019, the Port of New York and New Jersey handled 585,216 TEUs (20-foot equivalent units), the most ever for a month of February, and a 12.1 percent increase over the previous monthly record set in February 2018 of 521,921 TEUs. The record cargo volume handled allows the port to maintain its position as the busiest on the East Coast. The cargo growth was bolstered by a 7.6 percent increase in imported goods including clothing, furniture, electronics and other everyday products over the previous record for loaded imports set in February 2018. In addition to cargo containers, the port also set a new February record for cargo handled by rail, moving 49,551 containers, up 4.3 percent over the previous record set in February 2018.

Tunnels, Bridges and Terminals:

At the Port Authority’s crossings, the Goethals Bridge established a new February record for vehicle traffic in 2019, reporting 1,245,000 eastbound vehicles, an 8.7 percent increase over the previous record of 1,145,000 eastbound vehicles that traveled over the crossing in February 2018. In May 2018, a new Goethals Bridge was completely open to traffic, providing travelers with three, 12-foot lanes in each direction to accommodate future growth and shoulders to improve incident response and ensure reliable travel times.

At the Port Authority’s four bridges and two tunnels, total eastbound traffic volumes for February 2019 were 8.66 million, the highest February total in the past three years. This increase is part of the steady growth in annual total vehicle volumes over the past three years, from 115.9 million eastbound vehicles per year in 2015 to 120.2 million eastbound vehicles in 2018.
