PORT OF LONG BEACH: Winners Announced for Port's PHOTO Program

Port of Long Beach issued the following announcement on Oct. 4.

Winners were announced Thursday for the seventh annual Port of Long Beach PHOTO Program competition and will be on display throughout October along with photography from all the participants in the popular community arts project.

Original images captured by nearly 80 amateur and professional photographers will be displayed in a free exhibit open to the public from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays through Monday, Nov. 1, at the Port of Long Beach Administration Building lobby, 415 W. Ocean Blvd., Long Beach 90802.

The PHOTO Program Gallery is held each October in conjunction with the Arts Council for Long Beach as part of October is Arts Month. The images provide a unique window onto the sights, views and light of the harbor’s ships, docks, workers and marine life.

“The PHOTO Program is a labor of love that creates a dazzling display of artistic views of our favorite seaport,” said Bonnie Lowenthal, President of the Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners. “This year, it’s especially appropriate that these wonderful photographs are exhibited in our new Administration Building. During the run of the exhibit, the public will be able to view the beautiful images that these talented photographers created.”

The Arts Council’s panel of judges awarded the top prize to Stuart Kleinfelder of Irvine for “Stacked High and Wide,” a black-and-white image of cargo containers on a ship.

Second place went to Jasen Reyes of Long Beach for “Pace of the Port,” a colorful picture capturing a truck whizzing along the wharf with a blurred background of cargo containers. Third place was awarded to Weldon Spurling of Long Beach for “Untitled,” an abstract, moody and dark look at the Port’s bulk silos.

Honorable Mention went to Slobodan Dimitrov of Long Beach for “Loading Arms,” which features oil discharging arms at the Marathon Pipelines Terminal.

“We know the Port of Long Beach as a hub of trade and transportation, but it is also a place of scenic opportunity for the community,” said Mario Cordero, Executive Director of the Port of Long Beach. “If you’ve had the chance to see the Port from many angles, as our program participants witnessed, then you know that it is a visually dynamic and interesting place for photographers at every skill level.”

"The photographers are visually capturing the years of strategic planning, engineering and building of the Port of Long Beach as it becomes more sustainable. This gallery exhibit is the result of the interaction of the artists and the harbor, and each year, it’s a fascinating experience," said Griselda Suarez, Executive Director of the Arts Council for Long Beach.

The Port is now conducting an online “fan favorite” award for the PHOTO Program. Go to http://photoprogram2019.hscampaigns.com/ and vote for your favorite image. The winning photographer and one lucky voter will receive a package of Port promotional items.
