The American Road and Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) recently released 13 fact sheets that provide information to transportation construction companies on how to avoid accidents and fatalities involving falls.
The fact sheets were produced in coordination with industry specialists and ARTBA staff, and were supported through an agreement with the Federal Highway Administration. The fact sheets were released in line with the recent “National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction” week.
“Using illustrations, photos and plain English explanations, the fact sheets were designed to help contractors and workers understand the basic concepts of fall prevention and protection,” Brad Sant, ARTBA’s senior vice president of safety and education, said. “Our goal is to provide information in a way that any worker will understand, knowing what is needed to work safely in a variety of conditions.”
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) said approximately 40 percent of construction-related fatalities are due to falls. OSHA also said falls are the second leading cause of fatalities in the transportation construction field.
The fact sheets are made available for downloading at no cost through the National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse website, a project under the Transportation Development Foundation for ARTBA, which offers the materials in six languages: Spanish, Japanese, French, Russian, Chinese and Arabic.
