The Associated General Contractors of America honored three student chapters in Iowa, Oregon and California this week.

The contractors group named Iowa State University, Oregon State University and California State University Chico the nation’s top collegiate construction associations in the U.S. last year. The choice of honorees was based on analyses of award applications.

Iowa State University’s AGC student chapter was named the top student group, and the judges cited the group’s work repairing houses in the surrounding Ames community as a principal reason. They also work on homes in Nevada and in Tennessee. The work includes interior wall framing, roof repair, trim work, installing drywall, painting, installing insulation, building handicap ramps, winter weatherization, and installing decks and other features.

The Iowa chapter’s 67 members helped approximately a dozen families in 2015.

The award included $1,500 from the national organization, which the chapter said they would use to help fund future projects.

“These student chapters have demonstrated exceptional skills and experience that will serve them — and our industry — well in the future,” Chuck Greco, the national group’s  president and chairman of Houston, Texas-based Linbeck Group, said. “The young men and women involved in these projects are doing commendable work, and we want to encourage them to continue pursuing their goals and gaining valuable experience.”

Oregon State was chosen second best chapter, and California State University Chico was chosen third best.
