The groundbreaking celebration for a bypass project in Boulder City, Nevada, was held Monday, with representatives from the local community and government officials.
The bypass is expected to open up congestion along U.S. 93 as it serves interstate commerce between Phoenix, Ariz., and Las Vegas, Nev. According to the report from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the bypass could play a large role in the future implementation of Interstate 11 (I-11) that is planned to connect Phoenix and Las Vegas.
“The new bypass will reduce traffic congestion on a key commercial route, improving mobility for thousands of drivers each day,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said. “Projects like this are why we proposed the administration’s ‘GROW AMERICA’ Act, a $478 billion bill that provides funding over six years, so states and communities will have stable funding long enough to tackle big infrastructure projects.”
The FHWA reports that the stretch of highway serves approximately 34,000 vehicles on a daily basis. The bypass is expected to be completed in 2018 and will extend from the Nevada and Arizona border at the Hoover Dam Bypass to U.S. 93.
“By improving mobility for thousands of drivers each day, the new bypass will greatly improve the ability of Clark County to compete economically,” Deputy Federal Highway Administrator Gregory Nadeau said. “As everyone who has made that commute in the morning, you know anything we can do to shorten the drive from Boulder City to Las Vegas and back again is a good thing.”
