The first section of the San Onofre to Pulgas double track recently opened, adding 4.2 miles to California’s 351-mile Los Angeles-San Diego-San Luis Obispo (LOSSAN) rail corridor.
The San Diego portion of the LOSSAN corridor double-track project is more than two-thirds finished with this latest addition, which was designed by HNTB.
In addition to the first section, HNTB also designed Stage 2 of the San Onofre to Pulgas Double Track Project. When complete, the project will add 5.8 miles of track on the U.S. Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, north of Oceanside.
“This is an exciting milestone for the ongoing LOSSAN corridor enhancements,” Christopher Hahn, HNTB project manager, said. “Design work has been completed for the project’s second stage of construction… .”
The two new stretches of track will reach from San Onofre State Park to Las Flores Creek just south of Las Pulgas Road in the North County Transit District railroad right-of-way.
“Every double-tracked mile on the San Diego-to-Los Angeles rail corridor continues to improve capacity, reliability and efficiency on one of the busiest intercity passenger rail systems in the United States,” Kevin Reed, HNTB San Diego office leader, said.
