The Detroit Regional Chamber has called on Gov. Rick Snyder and the state Legislature to develop a solution to fund the state’s infrastructure needs by releasing a list of principles on Tuesday.

This announcement follows the failure of Proposal 1, which would have generated more transportation funding through a fuel tax increase and other tax hikes. Michigan voters rejected the measure by 80 percent.

The five principles:

  • Michigan’s transportation infrastructure should be funded by users of the system.
  • The funding crisis has been decades in the making, and an appropriate solution should be permanent and dedicated.
  • New revenue will be required to protect services that the business community and citizens demand.
  • Transportation is multi-modal, and all modes of transportation are important to competitiveness.
  • Speed is important, but getting it right is more important.
  • In detailing this list, the chamber’s website said transportation funding needs to come from users of the system, which the failed Proposal 1 did include. Prior to the ballot-measure vote, the chamber urged people to vote in favor of Proposal 1.
