The Chicago Transit Board (CTB) announced Wednesday that Dorval Carter Jr. will be the new president of the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA).

Carter, who has worked more than 30 years in public transit at the city and federal levels, was chosen to lead the CTA by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel. Most recently, Carter was acting chief of staff to U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx.

CTB Board Chairman Terry Peterson said Dorval is a talented leader with extensive transit experience who will continue the strong leadership that CTA needs as it continues Emanuel’s $5 billion transit investment.

“Carter understands the critical importance a strong transit system has for our region’s economy and the need to continue to provide customers with affordable, safe and reliable transportation each and every day,” Peterson said.

Carter will be the first African-American president of the CTA in its 68-year history.  He served in a variety of CTA positions from 2000 to 2009, including executive vice president, chief administrative officer and acting CTA president.

Carter received his juris doctor degree from Howard University School of Law in Washington, D.C., and Bachelor of Science degree in business administration and economics from Carroll College in Waukesha, Wisconsin.
