A report released this week from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), part of the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT), said drivers in the U.S. surpassed 3.1 trillion miles last year.

The data was released in the FHWA’s Traffic Volume Trends report.

This figure breaks the 2007 record of 3.003 trillion miles. When analysts broke down the numbers, over 264.2 billion miles were traveled in December 2015 alone.

The report from December 2015 uses seasonally adjusted data taken from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) to balance the seasonal travel variation and allow comparisons with months that may be more traveled.

The new figures confirm the trends identified in USDOT’s Beyond Traffic forecast that USDOT issued last year. The forecast  projects a 43 percent increase in commercial truck shipments and a population growth of 70 million by 2045.
