Leaders from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the general aviation (GA) industry have started a new campaign called Fly Safe to educate members of the aviation industry and GA community about how to stop Loss of Control (LOC) accidents from happening this flying season.
LOC accidents kill approximately 450 people each year. These accidents occur when an aircraft in controlled flight has an unintended department. This happens when an aircraft goes into a flight regime outside its regular flight envelope and may go into a spin or stall. This surprises the pilot and causes accidents.
Contributors to LOC accidents include failure to recognize aerodynamic spin or stall, failure to apply corrective action, lack of piloting ability, failure to follow procedure, lack of pilot experience and proficiency, poor judgment, lack of aeronautical decision making, intentional non-compliance with regulations, low pilot time in aircraft model and make, failure to follow procedure, and the influence of over-the-counter drugs that may impair pilot judgement.

Mike Whitaker launched the Fly Safe campaign Saturday with an announcement in Frederick, Maryland, at the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association’s Fly-In at the Frederick Municipal Airport.
