The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) said this week that it has extended the compliance deadline to implement its final rule on bus leasing and interchange until Jan. 1, 2018.

The new extension is included in the Federal Register. The rule requires that motor carriers transporting passengers through interstate commerce be properly identified and be held esponsible for regulatory violations during inspections, as well as crash and compliance probes.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) made specific recommendations for the FMCSA to manage leases for passenger carriers. These need to be managed in the same manner that the FMCSA manages its other leases held by for-hire property carriers.

Originally, the compliance deadline was Jan. 1, 2017. The year-long extension gives FMCSA officials more time to evaluate and possibly make changes to the rule amid several petitions that have been filed.
