The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) issued a safety advisory this week to owners of cargo tank vehicles manufactured by Trailers Y Tanques De Aluminio (TYTAL).
This advisory is specific to those vehicles capable of transporting 8,400, 8,717 and 10,500 gallons. It notes that these capacities do not have compliance with Federal Hazardous Materials Regulations. These cargo tanks have also been found to not have sufficient accident protection. The notice also states that continued use of these cargo tanks without repairs and significant testing is not authorized.
The 10,500 gallon model reportedly has a problem with its venting capacity that impacts the pressure release system.
The Department of Transportation states that operators and owners of subject vehicles will have legal consequences and fines if found to be using these model tanks, regardless of the most recent vehicle inspection.

This kind of cargo tank is primarily used to transport petroleum crude oil. Overdrive Magazine reports that the manufacturer has informed FMCSA that they have also warned known customers of these issues and are currently offering free repairs.
